Connecticut’s Fundamental Orders (1639) are considered to be the first written constitution in the world that granted rights to citizens. It is the reason that Connecticut’s nickname is “The Constitution State.” The charter granted to it by King Charles II in 1662 expanded upon those rights. The State of Connecticut traced its beginnings to three settlements along the Connecticut River in the early 1630s.
